ECG+ is an original product of Heartworks. This page records the origin of the app and its design, and sets out how the specific user-interface and user-experience (UI/UX) designs of ECG+ are protected. It serves both as a clear public record and as notice to anyone considering copying this work.
One of the first Apple Watch ECG analyzers on the App Store
ECG+ was one of the first dedicated Apple Watch ECG analyzer apps on the Apple App Store, first published on May 21, 2021. It was an early pioneer of reading and analyzing the Apple Watch's single-lead ECG recording in detail. It goes beyond the watch's own "sinus rhythm / AFib / inconclusive" label to mark individual beats, identify repeating patterns, and calculate clinical measurements. ECG+ helped shape many of the conventions now associated with this category.
Original UI/UX designs
Over years of development, ECG+ has created a number of original interface and interaction designs for presenting ECG data on a phone screen. These are the result of substantial original work and are distinctive to ECG+. They include, among others:
- The on-strip heartbeat annotation system: every heartbeat is identified and marked directly on the ECG trace itself, rather than in a separate list, so each beat is read in the context of the waveform.
- R / A / V beat markers: each beat is tagged on the strip with a single-letter marker. R for a normal (regular) beat, A for a premature atrial beat (PAC), and V for a premature ventricular beat (PVC), making ectopic beats visible at a glance.
- Pattern-linking lines: connecting lines drawn between marked beats to reveal repeating rhythms such as bigeminy, trigeminy, quadrigeminy, couplets and triplets, directly on the trace.
- The Heartbeat Signature: a single representative median-beat template distilled from a recording, presenting the P wave, QRS complex and T wave as one clean portrait of the heart's signal.
- The Heartbeat Navigator: a minimap of the full 30-second recording that lets a user scrub the strip and jump directly to any beat, including premature beats, on a small screen.
These are illustrative examples, not an exhaustive list. The overall look and feel, layout, visual language, iconography, colour and labelling conventions, and the way information is organized and presented throughout ECG+ are part of the same body of original design.
